A Little Behind

So by now you’ve probably realized that I’ve given up on my cookbook project. No, I haven’t turned into a slacker. June and July were busy months and I just haven’t been able to catch up. The project had a pretty good run though – it lasted 6 months!

It hasn’t stopped me from gathering more cookbooks though. Some of these books were gifts, some I bought myself and others are reviewer’s copies. The one thing they all have in common? They’re all filled with what look like super delicious recipes. I plan on cracking their spines and hitting the kitchen soon! Stay tuned for reviews!

I’ve reached the end of my recipe testing for Manifest Vegan‘s Allyons Kramer. The cookbook is supposed to be out in Spring 2012. I can’t wait to get it! Here are the last few dishes I made.

 Tofu Simmered in Peanut Sauce

 Spicy Edamame Coleslaw

 Mac and Cabbage Polenaise

Orange, Artichoke, Baby Arugula and Fennel Salad

Tempeh Temptations

On Saturday, my friend Deana and I attended Tempeh Temptations, a cooking class taught by Myra Kornfeld at Natural Gourmet Institute. Myra showed us how to make tempeh from scratch. Unfortunately, it takes about a day or so for tempeh to ferment, so we couldn’t try what she made, but we did have some fresh tempeh that she made during her last class, and it tasted amazing! Myra also gave us some really great cooking tips, such as always cut your onions with the grow lines when slicing them to cook, but cut against the grow lines when slicing for raw salads. I had no idea!

Here’s Myra getting the soybeans ready for the fermentation process.

The hulls need to be removed from the soybeans before they can be fermented.

Deana and I made Golden Curried Tempeh with Coconut Milk and Mango. We also made Chile-Orange Baked Tempeh but sadly I didn’t get a picture of it before it served.

Gene Baur Visits Montclair

Farm Sanctuary co-founder and president Gene Baur came to Montclair last weekend! I was so honored to host his visit. It’s quite possible that he is the nicest person I’ve ever met. I’m amazed at how calm and easy going he is, especially after reading his book Farm Sanctuary, Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food and learning about all of the factory farming horrors he’s seen and everything he’s done for animals.

We took Gene to Mesob for some super delicious vegan Ethiopian food. (Thanks to Lydia from From A to Vegan for the photo.)

Then we went to Go Lightly for some yummy vegan ice cream. Gene loved it! His exact quote was “Damn!”

Gene spoke about Farm Sanctuary’s early days, the harsh conditions of factory farming and the work he’s done for animals. He’s such an amazing speaker. His talk motivated many people to go vegan and inspired people that are already vegan to do more for animals.

After the talk, Gene answered questions, signed books and took photos with people. We sold out of books instantly!

Gene had such a great time here in Montclair that he said he’d like to come back again soon!
