The NYC Vegetarian Food Festival

Veg Fest

For this week’s edition of What I Ate Wednesday, I want to show off what I ate (and what I gawked at) at the New York City Vegetarian Food Festival, which took place this past weekend. It was two fun-filled days with lots of friends, food and random goodies. This was the third festival, and my favorite so far.

At Veg Fest

I spent some time with my friend Sharon from Big City Vegan, and we ran into Sarah from Rescue Chocolate. Sarah just happens to be one of the Veg Fest’s organizers too.

Guest Speakers

Some of the festival’s great guest speakers included Farm Sanctuary‘s Gene Baur, The Blissful Chef Christy Morgan, Artisan Vegan Cheese author Miyoki Schinner and Main Street Vegan‘s Victoria Moran.

Miyoko gave everyone samples of five different types of her incredible vegan cheeses. There’s no need to milk cows when you can make something this good at home with nuts!

Beyond Sushi

On Saturday I snuck out of the festival with Christy Morgan and went to Beyond Sushi for lunch. The first time I had their food was at the 2011 Veg Fest, and I’m really happy their have their own restaurant now.

Terri

On Saturday after the festival, Dennis and I stopped at Terri and got juices and sandwiches to go. Dennis had a vegetable panini and I had a “chicken” caesar wrap.

Erin Red

Back on Sunday for Day 2! I spotted Red Radio‘s Erin interviewing Gene Baur and Michelle from Herbivore.

Eats

Sunday’s lunch was a chickpea melt panini with potato salad from Harmony Cafe Kitchen and a strawberry juice concoction from I don’t know where. Both were delicious.

Veg Fest Food

Some of the festival’s food offerings came from the Cinnamon Snail (I had a donut that I snarffed down fast that I could photograph), cupcakes from Jersey’s own Pink Frosting Bakery, cake samples from two time Cupcake Wars champ Doron Peterasan from Sticky Fingers Bakery, chocolates from Rescue Chocolate and dips and spreads from The Regal Vegan.

Veg Fest nonfood

Of course, there were non-vegan vendors as well. Catskills Animal Sanctuary had a table, as did No Meat Athlete Matt Frazier. There were books from Book Publishing Co and t-shirts from Herbivore Clothing

Vegan on 4 a day

I bought a copy of Ellen Jaffe Jones’s Eat Vegan on $4 a Day and had Christy Morgan sign my copy of Blissful Bites. I also had Miyoko Schinner sign my Artisan Vegan Cheese book. Sadly though, my bag full of books went missing somewhere on the way home. I filled out a lost and found report at Penn Station and I’m really hoping it shows up!!

What we bought

So what did I buy? Well, I got some Basilicotta from The Regal Vegan, two containers of PlantFusion‘s protein powder, a few bags of Way Better Snacks tortilla chips, and of course, several Peanut Butter Pit Bulls from Rescue Chocolate.

  1. What was that dish from Beyond Sushi? I’ve never seen anything like it, and I’m a sushi fanatic!

    • Dianne says:

I had the green roll and Christy had the pickle roll. We both had tofu and carrot pieces and she had a a nutty buddy wrap.

  2. What fun! I wish we had a festival like this down here in North Carolina, maybe I should just head to New York for next year. I had some of those Way Better Snacks chips today (the same kind too), they are so very delicious!

  3. This is so cool! I would love to go to an event like this!

  4. Christy says:

It was so fun getting to hang with you!! I’m so bummed your books went missing :(
